Project Reflection
In the student driven design project we were in groups of three. We designed our future campus that fits the needs of our students and faculty and also is a sustainable green design.
I learned to create high-quality digital renderings in sketchup and photoshop. Not a lot of students have the opportunity to design their own campus, so it was a cool and relevant project for us. When we did this project, we did not have divided classes, but did all four subjects about this project. For science we had to research sustainable design and for math we had to do to scale drawings and create a budget.
To create high-quality renderings, it is very important to do several drafts and refine your ideas. Getting critique is helpful because then you can get input from others. I used sketchup to make my renderings. I had never used sketch up but it was pretty self explanatory. I created the skate park and the school in sketchup. The curve tool in sketchup was the tool I used most often in creating the skate park. However, using the curve tool to create the ramps was not that easy. Each ramp needs to have different angles and amounts of vertical gain and transition, so I had to I had stretch some of the ramps and use the curve tool carefully to make the ramps realistic.
My group was Jake Weary, Ryan G., and Michael Horton. This was not a good group to be in. I got a lot of work done, but it was difficult because often my group members were not in school or in class, so they would not do their work. I felt like I had to pull extra weight in my group to do things that other group members dropped the ball on. I have never been in a group where I was having to pull the extra weight, normally I am the one being pulled along by others when I don't do my work. Being in a group n this new capacity taught me that it is annoying when people don't do their work. The next time I am in a group, I would like to be in a group of people who do more work. The next time I am in a group, I will not be the one dropping the ball on my group members, because now I have experienced how annoying that is.
I think that it is important that students have a say in what their school looks like. If students have a space that they like and they had input in creating they are more likely to want to be at school and be motivated to be there and perform well. At our campus now, things are not aht aesthetically pleasing or have outside space with grass. If we had more outdoor opportunities and a space that looked like we care, I would be more motivated to spend time here working well.
